Americas weak southern flank Did the liberation of Iraq cost the US their nation
As drug violence claims more lives in Mexico, police have found 11 bodies inside an abandoned vehicle in the border state of Sonora.
The state attorney general's office said on Thursday that the bodies of the men, who were shot to death, were found in a stolen SUV with Arizona plates.
Some of the victims' hands and legs were cut off and left with threatening messages.
A state attorney general's office spokesman also said drug cartels were likely behind the attack.

WASHINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) - Mexico's drug cartels pose a clear threat to U.S. national security, Vice President Joe Biden said on Wednesday as the Obama administration named a drug czar to lead the U.S. fight against narco-trafficking.
Some 7,000 people have been killed in an upsurge in violence between Mexican cartels since January 2008. U.S. officials fear the violence is spreading into the southwestern United States, where there have been abductions and execution-style murders tied to the drug trade.+

ACAPULCO, Mexico (Reuters) - Eighteen people were killed in a shootout between drug gangs and soldiers in the Mexican beach resort of Acapulco, the army said on Sunday.
The gun battle, near tourist hotels in the Pacific Ocean resort, was a further blow to Mexico's tourism industry, already reeling from cancellations by foreigners scared away by the swine flu epidemic

While brutal violence among drug-trafficking groups in Mexico, especially along the U.S. border, has drawn unprecedented attention from politicians, the media and the American public, among U.S. law enforcement officials, the cartels are old news. They've been seeping into American cities for more than a decade; a 2008 report noted the presence of distribution networks linked to them in 203 cities throughout the U.S.

Despite whats happening in Mexico do you guys think Mexico will have the Worlds 5th largest economy
Well you know how USA and other Nations are saying how Mexico has become a failed state? And that Mexico could come to a quick and sudden collapse because of the swine flu, drug wars, less remittances, less petroleum found, and less tourism due to the fact that most are already discouraged to visit Mexico. And they are ALREADY comparing it to Pakistan and Iraq. I think Mexico has its problems but not like Pakistan or Iraq (you wont see suicide bombers, destroyed buildings, ect). I think some of the stuff is histeria, because remittances are only (AT MOST) 2-3% of Mexico's total GPD.
I remember reading an article on Goldman Sachs saying that Mexico could become the world's 5th Largest Economy, right after the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, China, and India) and that its going to be up there with Japan and Germany.
You guys DO know that Mexico does have the capacity to be in at least the top 5 world's largest Economies. There were many instances in the 60's 80's, and 90's where Mexico could have really grew and become a great nation, but every time one after another, Mexico has experienced inflation, higher immigration rates, etc.

I TOLD YOU,... HERE IT COMES!!! I JUST READ THIS NEWS;------>> GET READY TO PAY...MEXICO CITY (AFP) – Mexico said on Tuesday the swine flu epidemic had ravaged the country's vital tourism industry and cost its economy billions as it looked to reopen shuttered businesses after a five-day shutdown.
Finance Minister Agustin Carstens said the impact of A(H1N1) influenza had been devastating for tourism and put the cost at "close to 0.3 percent" of GDP or 2.3 billion dollars (1.7 billion euros).
Mexicans were eagerly awaiting the resumption of normal business at the end of the emergency shutdown, while the government airlifted home scores of nationals quarantined in China.

What percentage of MEXICOs gnp is based on tourism
I know it must be substantial but I have no idea what the actual percentage is. I'm sure this swine flu fright has hurt Mexico's economy and likely will for some time to come. I applaud the quick and responsible action taken by Mexican officials to limit the spread of the flu and protect it's people.
I wish my own government would show as much concern for it's people as it does for Mickey Mouse.
I live in Florida and we do have the swine flu here. The politicians won't even admit to how widespread it is or where the concentrations of the illness is. We, the people, are deeply concerned and, once more, disappointed in our government.
Get well soon, Mexico, and thank you for the fine example you set in this instance.

AHH Went to Cozumel Mexico
I went to Cozumel on March 9 of this year. I've heard that Swine Flu and other diseases/illnesses can lay dormant for a while. What are the chances of me getting it? Florida might become a hot spot for it because of all the tourism here...
It might be my imagination, which I hope it is, but lately I have had:
-scratchy/sore throat
-Headache
-Sore muscles

Will a recurrence of the 1918 swine flu epidemic in Mexico cause the USA to enforce border security
Just a few days ago, in regard to "enhanced interrogation", Eric Holder was saying he was going to uphold and enforce any law that has been violated, so now with a massive flu outbreak in Mexico City that the Mexican government is trying to quarrantine, will we finally see some action securing our country? Yes, it will spread inevitably but time is precious when facing a possible pandemic in order to develope and mass produce vaccines, we have the facilities and personnel but they may not be in the right congressional districts to be awarded government vaccine contracts. We also need to stop tourism/travel into Mexico, as well as airline stops there. The desription of the disease so far seems to match that of 1918, personally, due to allergies/hay fever in my family, despite eight members enlisted in WW1 none of my family was effected by it, (it killed more service personnel than the war), it attacks otherwise healthy people, whose immune system overeacts. In other words those who are most likely to ignore the threat are the most likely to suffer, wash your hands, get your vit. C and flue meds now to be ready.
Well....looks like they are responding with....tough sounding....rhetoric...maybe if they talk it to death....they can find a solution...such as Blame Bush! That will cure it. You'd think they'd be more concerned about the deaths of future democrat voters down there in Mexico? As soon as they realized the disease was jumping direct from HUMAN to HUMAN they should have closed off the country, sealed the border, illegal or legal immigrants, stopped air traffic and quarantined everyone whose been down there for a few days to make sure they weren't ill. (Ellis Island?) They have guaranteed, if this virus strain is deadly, it will circle the globe, and reduce the world population just like the earth-worshippers have been hoping for, after all there is no faster way to curtail CO2 emissions, than culling the human population, that is what Jaques Costeau was advocating. If the plague won't do it, then some idiot will start a war, I don't mean a little tail-wag-the-dog type adventure either.
Yes, last reports were Cuba still has a very active bio/chem warfare lab not far outside Havana although it's believed it is more of an international effort. I have considered the possibility that they are responsible but viruses mutate unpredictably, efforts have been made to program a DNA-specific targeting virus, both in North Korea and the Middle East, China and Isreal were sharing such technology at one point. But targeting Mexicans would make no sense, unless it was an accidental escapee with someone who was someohow involved with teh weapons programs in Cuba or teh Middle East, in which case this is a warning, because it seems tamiflu easily cures it. I'm not harping on the immigration issue, I'm harping on teh failure to recognize when it transmits human-to-human it is a pandemic alert and all travel, legal or otherwise, must stop first, then quarantine, analyze, and let people proven healthy go on. Time is precious, every pandemic may be inevitable, but antidotes take time.
